Stephen is a part-time certified trainer at Instinct Portland. He offers in-home consultations, private lessons, and home school programs. Stephen specializes in reactivity, practical life skills for dogs, and building positive long lasting relationships between dogs and their family members.

Stephen is a graduate of the prestigious and internationally recognized Karen Pryor Academy where he became a certified training partner (KPA-CTP) and is a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. He has a bachelors of science and nursing from Georgetown University and many years of nursing experience working in a busy urban emergency department. His education in both dog training and human sciences gives him a unique perspective to help with both simple and complex behavior challenges.

With over 10 years of experience working with dogs, Stephen brings a wealth of hands-on knowledge, patience, and compassion to every training session. His background includes working in a busy urban dog shelter, where he gained extensive experience caring for and training dogs with a wide range of personalities, backgrounds, and behavioral needs.

This experience has shaped a thoughtful, practical approach to dog training—one that focuses on building trust, clear communication, and a strong relationship between dogs and their people. Whether helping with everyday manners or more challenging behaviors, Stephen is dedicated to helping dogs and their families thrive together.

Beyond the Clinic

Stephen lives in Portland with his wife, two high energy kids, and two dogs. They enjoy exploring the PNW by hiking, paddle boarding, and eating delicious food.
