Our Instinct Helper Dogs are carefully selected, well-socialized dogs who have been trained to work alongside our behavior team. They aren't just present in sessions — they actively participate in the training process.
- Teach puppies appropriate play skills and social cues during critical developmental windows
- Serve as calm, confident partners for dogs working through leash reactivity and dog-dog fear
- Support desensitization and counter-conditioning protocols in a controlled, graduated way
- Help trainers assess a dog's behavior and body language in real social scenarios
- Model relaxed, confident behavior that gives nervous dogs permission to feel safe
- Each Helper Dog is paired with a specific trainer and gets ongoing behavioral support themselves

How Helper Dogs Support
the Training Process
Helper Dogs aren't just there to look cute. They play an active, intentional role in behavior work — and they're only used when it's the right tool for the job.
Puppy Socialization
During the critical socialization window (8–16 weeks), appropriate exposure to calm, confident adult dogs is one of the most valuable experiences a puppy can have. Helper Dogs provide exactly that — real, appropriate canine interaction with a trainer watching every second.
Reactivity & Fear Work
For dogs working through leash reactivity, dog-dog fear, or generalized anxiety around other dogs, Helper Dogs serve as controlled exposure partners. Distance, duration, and intensity are all carefully managed to stay under threshold and build positive associations at the right pace.
Behavior Assessment
Sometimes seeing how a dog responds to a calm, well-socialized peer tells us more than any other tool. Helper Dogs support behavioral assessment — giving our trainers and Dr. Pachel's behavior team real-world information to inform treatment planning.

At Instinct Portland, we believe that the best dog training involves real dogs — not just humans working with dogs in isolation. Our Helper Dog program is one of the things that sets us apart from other Portland dog trainers and behavior consultants. By pairing our certified trainers with carefully selected, well-socialized canine partners, we're able to offer a level of in-context behavioral support that simply isn't possible without them.
Whether your dog is a new puppy in St. Johns working on foundational social skills, a reactive rescue in Southeast Portland who struggles to pass other dogs on the leash, or an anxious dog in Lake Oswego who has never had a positive experience with another dog — our Helper Dogs can be part of the solution.

Every Helper Dog at Instinct Portland is force-free trained, behaviorally healthy, and temperament-assessed before being used in any client session.
Lives With Their Trainer
Every Helper Dog lives at home with one of our trainers — not in a kennel. They're family members first, training partners second.
Temperament Assessed
Not every dog makes the cut. Our Helper Dogs are evaluated for appropriate social behavior, stress tolerance, and suitability before working with client dogs.
Used Only When Right
Helper Dogs are a tool, not a given. We only bring them into sessions when it's genuinely the right fit for your dog's specific training plan and goals.
